Thanksgiving for Sibu

DAP thanks all who helped create "Sibu Miracle"

8 June 2010, KL - A thanksgiving dinner was held by the DAP yesterday at Restoran Puteri in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail to celebrate the “miraculous” victory of Pakatan Rakyat in the recent Sibu-by-election which was won by DAP’s Wong Ho Leng.

The 15-table dinner hosted by MP for Sibu, Wong Ho Leng, was a gesture of appreciation and gratitude for the contribution and hard work put in by not only DAP cadres, but also fellow Pakatan Rakyat leaders, members and supporters.

Top-level Pakatan Rakyat leaders present included the Kelantan Menteri Besar and PAS President YAB Dato’ Haji Nik Aziz Nik Mat, DAP Parliamentary Leader YB Lim Kit Siang, Penang Chief Minister & DAP Secretary-General YAB Lim Guan Eng, Parliamentary Opposition Leader Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, PKR Vice President YB Azmin Ali, DAP Deputy-Chairman Dr. Tan Seng Giaw, PAS Deputy President Nasaruddin Mat Isa and PAS Secretary-General Datuk Mustafa Ali.

Also in attendance were another 25 other Members of Parliament and State Assemblypersons from all three PR parties. A seven-minute video clip was also shown, with highlights of the work put in by all involved throughout the hard-fought campaign.

In his speech, YAB Dato' Haji Nik Aziz slammed the Federal Government for propagating the mentality that Malays were the only protectors of Islam in Malaysia. “Agama is from God, and the Law is from the People”, the venerable leader said, adding that it was wrong for UMNO leaders to prioritise their own race and ignoring the teachings of Islam. He concluded his speech by emphasizing a need a more inclusive concept of Islam which he termed “Islam terbuka”, which treats all of humanity fairly, including non-Muslims.

De facto leader for PR, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim quoted American poet T.S. Eliot -- “The only wisdom we can hope to acquire is the wisdom of humility: humility is endless.” -- saying that the many scandals and controversial issues linked to the Barisan Nasional was hugely beneficial to PR’s cause, and urged the coalition’s partners to persevere and continue in its mission towards Putrajaya.

YAB Lim Guan Eng stressed the huge significance of the Sibu victory, saying that it has renewed the hopes and aspirations of Malaysians who desire change. Lim also highlighted the ongoing and committed teamwork and understanding between PR parties, evident in the by-election through the close cooperation between the parties’ polling and counting agents for the postal vote process.

The dinner’s host YB Wong Ho Leng gave an insightful account of what transpired on 16 May and recalled the numerous tension-filled situations throughout the day, which continued even after the counting of postal votes had been completed. Wong expressed his sincerest gratitude to all those who had contributed to the “Miracle of Sibu”.

Nasaruddin Mat Isa touched on the delicate relationship between the Muslims and the non-Muslims, and commended the Penang state government for the building of a surau within the KOMTAR building which houses the state government office. He criticized BN for not having done anything in the last 30 years

Noting that BN was still practising old politics, YB Azmin Ali emphasized PR’s “new politics” and its steadfast commitment to a better Malaysia for all Malaysians regardless of race or religion. The MP for Gombak stressed the importance of true friendship and trust between PR parties in the coalition’s struggle for a better country, and slammed those who were power-hungry for financial rewards or ministerial posts.

DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang rounded up the evening’s festivities by quoting the words of NEAC members, who compared Malaysia to being on a “burning platform” where “doing nothing was not an option”. In the same vein, Lim reminded the dinner crowd that all Malaysians should take charge and capitalise on the chain reaction sparked off by the 308 political tsunami.

“This chain reaction marks the beginning of a new dawn for Malaysians and PR, and we have to keep working hard to save Malaysia from the ‘burning platform’ situation,” he urged.

The dinner ended at 11pm.

Dear YB Hannah

You should check your fact first before posting this article. YAB Nik Aziz is Mursyidul Am (Spiritual Leader) for PAS and not PAS' President
